Kelvin Slade 1 Dan
Kelvin, the son of judo instructors Malcolm and Lynnette Slade, commenced judo at the early age of 3. He entered competition as a yellow belt at the age of 5 and experienced success as Victorian state champion in the Under 10, Under 13, Under 16 and Young Men’s divisions within the Judo Federation of Australia (Victoria). Kelvin represented Victoria at the Australian national championships on two occasions and toured New Zealand in 1992 with the Victorian Judo team.
Spending a year out of competition judo through injury Kelvin commenced studying judo refereeing and became a state level C referee in 1994.
Kelvin travelled to Japan in 1995 as an exchange student. He practiced and taught at the Imaichi Prefectural High School Judo Club alongside the 3 year reigning Tochigi prefectural champion Odaira Kazutomo. During his training at the school Kelvin was awarded his shodan (1st level blackbelt).
During a 6 year absence from judo he studied Economics at Monash University and spent 4 years living in Asia. Kelvin also majored in Japanese and Chinese (Mandarin) becoming fluent in both. In 1998 Kelvin spent a year in Beijing studying at the Beijing Language and Culture University. After completing his Economics degree, Kelvin then lived in Japan working for several Japanese companies in the electronics industry.
Kelvin returned to judo while living in Valencia and Malaga, Spain in 2002. Since returning to Australia in 2003, Kelvin has contributed as an assistant judo instructor at the Southern – Bentleigh McKinnon Judo Club.
Kelvin’s favourite Tachiwaza (standing) techniques include tai-otoshi, uchimata, tani-otoshi and ko-uchi-gari, while he is also known for Newaza (ground) techniques including kuzure-kami-shiho-gatame, tate-shiho-gatame, yoko-shiho-gatame and juji-gatame.
